Super Heroes Among Us

East Troy’s local heroes, Police Chief Jeremy Swendrowski and Fire Department Chief Joe Degaro will be giving hero training at the library on Monday, April 6th beginning at 1:00 pm.

Miss Maria has planned an hour-long Super Hero Academy to take place on the last day of ETCSD’s spring break. As stated above, the training will include training activities developed by our own police and fire chiefs. An agility course and the floor is lava will also be part of the lessons.

No super hero is complete without a proper uniform. Participants will have the opportunity to design their own masks and receive a super hero ring. The truly dedicated will also want to sign up for the April 11th Art Attack and make their own shield.

This week brings back the Spice Club. With the help of Prairie Lakes Library System, we started this in February with a sample of lavender and a recipe for lavender scones. I love scones and have made them several times, but chose to branch out and try my hand at lavender shortbread instead. It was delightful and sent me on a trip to Penzeys Spices for more.

The April spice is sumac. The background indicates that has as a lemony flavor and has been used in about every type of dish there is. The included recipe is a for a roast chicken. Lemony and chicken sounds delightful and worth a try to branch off from my usual baking; however, finding a dairy or dessert recipe also sounds intriguing.

Recipes with enough sumac to make it are available while supplies last. In February the lavender samples lasted 12 days. We’ll see which is more popular. Spice Club runs every other month in 2026.

For those of you who have been patiently waiting for Killers of the Flower Moon to be available, it was finally released on DVD last week. After its 2023 theatrical release and ten Academy Award nominations, Killers spent time on Apple TV and Amazon Prime (for an additional price) before finally being released on DVD with new cover art and two documentaries for those who want to learn more.

If you’re looking for something more recent, we also have Emma Stone in Bugonia which was nominated for several Academy Awards this year and Jessie Buckley in Hamnet who won an Academy Award. Looking for something more action packed? Try Glen Powell in The Running Man.

Here’s a trivia question, which of these films is not adapted from a book?

Reading Now: Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon (April book club selection)

Listening to Now: In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick (I did finish Moby Dick before Miss Lisa thanks to being to sick to read and a trip to Eau Claire. My current listen is the nonfiction account of MB’s inspiration.)
