Miss Maria has several Post-Summer Reading Program programs planned for the last month of summer including two more Art Attacks, two more Not Your Average Book Clubs, one Sensory Playdate, one Family Movie, and one more Trading Cards. I was hoping to list them a bit more like the 12 Days of Christmas countdown, but the numbers don’t work.
Art Attack was a new program last summer to work with the Color Our World theme. It was so popular Miss Maria continued it monthly through the school year and bi-weekly this summer. It is meant for all ages including adults. The last two for this summer are July 31st and August 14th, both Fridays, at 3:15 with registration required.
On July 31st, participants will be creating a dragon’s egg using iridescent colored thumb tacks to create a jewel sheen to the scales. I’ve seen her example. It is very cool. During the Summer Reading Program sign up, children were offered a ready to hatch dinosaur egg for adoption. The plan was, they would share pictures of their dinosaurs over the summer for us to post on social media. One adoptee went on a trip west to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. With school approaching, those dinosaurs will need a safe place to stay during the day. Miss Maria has terrariums planned for the August Art Attack.
Not Your Average Book Club is intended for the 9–13-year-old set. While we adults discuss characters and plot points, Miss Maria’s book club plays games and eats book related snacks and treats. As with the book club for adults, copies of the books are available for checkout at the library. August 3rd at 3:30 Not Your Average 9–13-year-old Readers will be eating snacks related to the graphic novel Lost Time, which of course involves dinosaurs. Their final summer book club date is August 17th. This program runs once a month throughout the school year as well.
The Sensory Playdate in the Park replaces our regular Thursday morning Preschool Playdate on August 6th at 10:00am. As indicated by the name, it is held at Playmore Park perhaps mainly because it’s a mess. There will be paint and bubbles and buckets of rice and whatever else Miss Maria can think of to touch, see, feel, and hear. We mostly leave out taste unless you can taste happy excitement.
All I have about the Family Movie is the date, August 20th at 1:00pm. Popcorn will be eaten and the movie takes place in a museum. At night.
Trading Cards is the more generic name for the original Pokemon program. All card and board game players are welcome. The last date for that is August 10th at 3:30pm.
