Get out your calendars because the library is going to fill October so much that this article may only cover the first week.

October 2nd & 3rd are technically blank days for the library. That weekend is the East Troy Lions Club’s annual Classic Car Show, which means hundreds of cars will be parked around us on Saturday. Come see them, but know you won’t be picking up a book. The Friday before we select as the annual staff work day.

This year’s project is one that’s been on my to do list for four and a half years. Ask me how long I’ve been here and the answer will be the same. It’s taken that long to come up with a plan the staff agrees with. Our nonfiction section is unusual for a public library in that we have one. Most libraries separate nonfiction just as they do fiction – by age of the target audience. Not doing so means books for a third grader are mixed in with books for adults. This does not result in third graders being exposed to adult books. It generally results in third graders having no idea we have nonfiction books for them. That will change on October 2nd when we create a juvenile nonfiction section.

Brandy has already added juvenile stickers to their books and we have weeded books that haven’t left the library in over a decade if ever. In the next few weeks, we will pull those out and shift the other books down the way to create open shelving that is at the end of the juvenile fiction books. While we may be starting now, finishing will require moving the entire nonfiction section and the young adult section. I’ve been preparing with workouts at the YMCA.

October 6th is our Friends of the ETLPL’s next fundraiser. It’s a fun one. Connie Gehl has named them the recipients of her BINGO Night fundraiser for that day. Players still win the pots and enjoy themselves. They have an option of donated money to the Friends for an extra BINGO card during specific games. This will be the third time the Friends have been selected. The first two times raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 each. The Friends have a specific fund they have set aside for a new library. Proceeds from Tuesday, October 6th will go into that fund.

Next week, learn about the ADRC program, Traffic In the Brain.
