For its September book, the Adult Book Club has selected local author Mary Ann Noe’s Deserving of Murder. Rather than a traditional book discussion, we are planning a Meet the Author event and a field trip.

Mary Ann Noe is a docent at Ten Chimneys in Genesee Depot, formerly the summer home of Broadway stars Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Ten Chimneys was a getaway spot for friends such as Noel Coward and Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles. Upon retirement, Lunt and Fontanne moved there and remained full time until their deaths in 1977 and 1983. Today it is a National Historic Landmark open for tours May through early December.

Deserving of Death is Noe’s first book in a series featuring Lunt and Fontanne as the main characters. In that one a murder has taken place on the grounds and they become the detectives. Noe will give a talk about her books on Monday, August 17^th at 2:00pm. The East Troy Intergenerational Community Center (IGET) has agreed to host this event for us. Participation in the Adult Book Club is not required to attend. Neither registration nor fees are required for this portion of the programming. All are welcome.

In lieu of a traditional discussion, the book club will be touring Ten Chimneys with Noe as our guide. She has agreed to schedule two dates, Wednesday, September 9^th and Friday, September 11^th with a limit of ten people per tour. Book club participants do have preferred sign up, which ends August 17^th at the Meet the Author event. At that time, remaining slots will be available to all library patrons on a first paid basis.

Cost for the tour is $28 for the main house only, which has an elevator for all but the smaller third story, or $35 for the full tour, which involves walking through the grounds and an additional building. We will have a mix of partial and full tour participants. Ten Chimneys has requested one payment, so the library is collecting the fee and will make the payment. Spots are not secure until payment has been made.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation; however, they are welcome to meet at the library to arrange for carpooling. Some members of the book club intend to meet at Cornerstone Restaurant in Genesee Depot for dessert and conversation following the tour.
