Summer programming, it’s not just for kids anymore. Actually, it never was we are just better at promoting the children’s portion.
First of all, adults are always welcome to join in on the reading portion of our summer programming. While we don’t have raffle items specifically designated for adults, several items are most likely to appeal to them: Martin’s Hardware gift card, raised garden bed, food/veggie spinner, and the $50 gift card donated by Refinity Wellness. Adults with children may be interested in the Milwaukee Public Museum membership, which will be valid for the current location and the new one opening in 2027.
Specific adult programming is scheduled on June 25th at 1:00. The East Troy Intergenerational Community Center is lending us their space for Amber Exploration. Rita Dow will share her knowledge of amber. Rita is a former educator who in the words of her sister, Miss Maria, she loves learning new stuff and sharing it with other people, and she’ll wear any costume. Rita and Maria are Polish. Their mother brought amber back from Poland. The learning commenced. Participants are welcome to bring their own amber pieces to show.
The next Adult Book Club selection also has a knowledge focus. Marie Benedict specializes on research based historical fiction about women in history we should have learned about in school. Her Hidden Genius tells the story of Rosalind Franklin who worked with DNA and discovered its double helix structure. Book discussions take place July 9th and 14th. The Tuesday group may be meeting on Lake Beulah. Check with the library for the address as the date draws near.
The heavy emphasis on children’s programs in the summer can also be looked at as for adults. How many times does a caregiver hear, “I’m bored,” over the course of a summer? As much as students love summer vacation, they still want to do something and the library lets them do it for free.
To that end, the 1:30 Monday, June 15th program is Dinosaur Discover. We will host Nick Wiersum, Curator at the Dinosaur Discover Museum in Kenosha. He promises an “action-packed journey into the world of paleontology.” His presentation including archeology tools and fossils will be the perfect preparation for our June 22nd Archeological Dig organized by Miss Maria (the self-proclaimed Fun Sister).
Our first Family Movie of the summer is at 1:00pm on Thursday, June 18th. On a side note, Miss Maria has decided Zootopia 2 is better than the first one.
The Teen Thursday craft on June 25th at 3:15 is Book Badazzling. Participants are encouraged to bring in a their own book; however, we will have a selection to choose from.
