Finding Joy

National Library Week begins on Sunday, April 19th. This year’s theme is Find Your Joy at the Library. Of course, libraries give joy the other 51 weeks of the year with every notification of an available hold, checkout of an experience pass, or discovery of a new author. Although the most excited patron I remember seeing had just discovered we have chairs available for checkout.

We’ll work to bring extra joy next week and would love to hear what about the library brings you joy.

Miss Maria has a special teen program at the end of the month to bring them joy. April has five Thursdays April 30th doesn’t fall into the regular rotation of Teen Thursday themes of Open Games, Create, Open Games, and Trivia & Tasting. Our extra Thursday will be Mini Golf. Set up for that program is very involved, so she is asking participates to register by the previous Thursday, April  23rd. They may do so while tasting and learning trivia. That program has taught me Oreos has a wide array of flavors and gimmicks. I like the 4 of July Pop Rocks, but can do without the experiments on crème flavors.

After three years of running the Yarn & Stitch program, I finally decided to branch out from my crochet ability and learn to knit. My first knit wash cloth is currently 8 inches long (34 stitches) and 1.5 inches high (10 rows). In two weeks, they will teach me to purl. My first impressions are that wooden needles are nice to work with, I need straight needles rather than the circular one I was using, and I like controlling the yarn with both hands rather than one or the other.

My goal is to make my own sweaters. I would also be up for gifting them if any of my friends or family would actually wear what I made. As someone who is often cold, I love sweaters and wear them all year round. Only the weight changes from winter to summer. Few winter sweaters are heavy enough or they pill after being worn only a few times. My teachers are going to help me select quality yarn and help me read the patterns. Look for my first handmade sweater about the time we open a new library. Both occasions will bring me great joy at the library. Meanwhile, my kitchen wash cloths will be a mix of crocheted and knit/purl.

Reading Now: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (Great American Read and shorter then Moby Dick)

Listening to Now: The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai (Also shorter than Moby Dick)
